Hero to the Core: Oklahoma Principal Who Stopped a School Shooter Crowned Prom King

Ten days after taking a bullet for his students, Kirk Moore walked across the gym floor to the sound of "Hero" — because that's exactly what he is.

On April 18, students at Pauls Valley High School in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma — a town of roughly 6,000 people about 60 miles south of Oklahoma City — crowned their principal Prom King. It's an honor traditionally reserved for a popular student. This year, there was no question who deserved it.

It was just ten days earlier, on April 7, that Moore — a 60-year-old educator with more than 35 years serving his district — heard a commotion in the school lobby and rushed in to find 20-year-old Victor Lee Hawkins pointing a handgun at a student. Moore didn't hesitate. He charged at the gunman. Hawkins fired, striking Moore in the leg, but Moore tackled him to the ground and the threat was stopped.

What could have been a mass tragedy was over in moments, because one man chose to run toward danger instead of away from it.

Investigators later revealed that Hawkins, inspired by the 1999 Columbine massacre, had stolen two semi-automatic pistols from his father and arrived at the school specifically to kill Principal Moore. The surveillance footage of the takedown went viral — as did the video of Moore being crowned, which racked up 1.6 million views on X alone.

When the DJ declared Moore "our king" and the gymnasium erupted in cheers, it wasn't just a prom night moment. It was an entire community saying thank you in the only way they knew how.

Hawkins has been charged with intent to kill and firearm-related offenses, with his next court date set for May 8.

As for Kirk Moore — he's still their principal. Still their protector. And now, officially, their king.
