One Step at a Time: Virginia Teacher Has Run Over 100 Miles — and Raised $100,000 — for Her Students

Most teachers give their students everything they've got inside the classroom. Kate Fletcher gives them everything she's got on the road, too.

Since 2016, the English teacher at Louisa County High School in Virginia has run hundreds of miles under the banner of her annual "Lion Pride Run" — not for medals or recognition, but to fund college scholarships for her students. Her most recent run covered an astonishing 107 miles, taking Fletcher all the way to historic Jamestown, Virginia.

In total, she has raised more than $100,000. One hundred thousand dollars. Earned mile by mile, step by step, by a teacher who refused to believe her students' futures should be limited by what they could afford.

It's the kind of dedication that defines the very best of American education — not just teaching kids what's in a textbook, but fighting for their futures with everything you have. Fletcher's students aren't just learning to write and read. They're learning what it looks like when someone believes in you enough to run until they can't take another step.

The Lion Pride Run has grown into a beloved tradition in the Louisa County community, with supporters showing up to cheer Fletcher along the way. And while the mileage is remarkable — 107 miles is not a jog around the block — what's even more remarkable is the reason she keeps lacing up her shoes: to make sure one more student gets a shot at the life they're working toward.

America's classrooms are full of teachers who go above and beyond. Kate Fletcher is a reminder of just how far above and beyond can actually go.
